Acupuncture is a treatment
based on the ancient Chinese theory that the body's energy (Qi) flows along
12 main meridians and 8 extraordinary meridians. The smooth flow of qi in
the meridians corresponds
to radiant health and longevity, disruptions in the flow of qi result in
blockages and pain. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles at
the sites of convergence of qi throughout the body, termed acupoints, to
promote the unobstructed circulation of energy and vital substances in the
channels. Acupuncture, along with Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medical
massage (Tui Na) and medical Qi Gong, has been a major part of primary
healthcare in China for the last 5,000 years. It is used extensively for a
variety of medical purposes ranging from the prevention and treatment of
disease to relieving pain and reducing side-effects of conventional medical
treatments. As in many oriental medicine practices, the emphasis of
acupuncture is on prevention. In traditional Chinese medicine, the
acupuncture's highest
goal is to enable you to live a long, healthy life.
Chinese
Herbal Medicine is an integral part of my healing system, and has developed
over the course of centuries alongside acupuncture. Our system of herbal
supplements uses classical Chinese herbal formulas with modifications to
address individual conditions. Because of their innate flexibility, the
formulas allow for easy subtractions and additions
to accommodate each individual's needs. Traditional Chinese herbs and
products help not only to relieve the symptoms of disease, but also work to
alleviate its underlying causes. They may be taken as tablets, powders,
granules, and medicinal teas, and are easy to have at your fingertips at
home, at work, or on vacation. Regardless of which type of herbal product
you choose, it is a powerful tool to affect change in your health,
especially when used in tandem with acupuncture and making healthier
lifestyle changes. If you are
currently taking medications prescribed by your physician, we will be glad
to discuss your condition with your doctor before prescribing an herbal
formula
Therapeutic Yoga is a gentle and nurturing healing practice integrating several healing modalities - Restorative yoga, gentle and Yin yoga, healing touch, breathwork and guided meditation, to create an experience that supports the mind, body and spirit in the process of healing. Central to this truly holistic practice is the understanding that the ability to heal is within every living being. Therapeutic Yoga offers tools to every patient to enhance and continue the work of healing in a group setting or individually and to bring the sense of wholeness unique to yoga to your everyday life. In this type of yoga practice emphasis is placed on postures (asanas) performed while seated or lying on the floor and held for several minutes to induce a deep sense of relaxation and rejuvenate the joints and connective tissue. During all phases of the practice, poses are supported by appropriate positioning of props, bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps - minimizing the active work done by the muscles and thus allowing the body and mind to truly "let go" and heal. Each pose is accompanied by a choice of breathing techniques, guided meditations and moments of silence to allow you to absorb the essence of the practice. Because of its extensive use of props and asana modification, as well as the mindfulness aspects, this practice is very appropriate for anyone recovering from injury or living with a chronic condition. In the words of Cheri Clampett, founder of Therapeutic Yoga, "When we become still, we begin to hear the guidance of our inner voice and to restore the sacred rhythm of rest and contemplation. By following that inner guidance, we help the body naturally move into balance, where deep levels of healing occur."
